MacArthur Foundation Award

February 2012

Dear Partners, Supporters and Friends of Crisis Action,

I am delighted to announce that Crisis Action is the 2012 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation's Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. More information is available in the official media release (PDF) and on the MacArthur Foundation's website.

This much coveted Award is given to a select group of innovative organisations to enable them to grow effectively and sustainably. The Award comes at an opportune time as Crisis Action embarks on a five-year strategy to increase its core campaign capacity, strengthen its presence in sub-Saharan Africa and work on better supporting partners to engage with emerging powers. The Award will be instrumental in making this all happen. It includes a one-off gift of $750,000 which MacArthur has earmarked to build Crisis Action's organisational reserves and to underpin its strategic planning.

When I joined the Board of Crisis Action in 2007, the organisation operated with seven staff in four European countries on a budget of less than $300,000. Since then, the organisation has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis. It has now become one of the leaders in its field, with 20 staff in seven countries across three continents and a budget of $2.5 million. This attests to the talent and fantastic hard work of Crisis Action's small and dedicated team under the outstanding leadership of Executive Director, Gemma Mortensen, but also to the impact of our collective efforts, as coordinated by Crisis Action over recent years, to ensure governments uphold their obligations to protect civilians in conflicts from Sudan to Syria, Ivory Coast to Iran.

As an organisation working behind the scenes and out of the limelight, the Award is a tremendous accolade and a testament to the power and inherent value in joint civil society action. Thank you for your tireless and invaluable contributions and support to Crisis Action - it is this that enables and sustains such a compelling and effective model of change. Crisis Action will now work hard to ensure that the Award is used to add ever greater value to your own activities.

We look forward to our continued collaboration and I am sure you will join me in congratulating the Crisis Action team on this terrific achievement and thanking the MacArthur Foundation for recognising Crisis Action's creativity and effectiveness.

Nick Grono
Chair, Crisis Action
Deputy President, International Crisis Group
